For over 25 years, Memphis "Beat the Odds" (MBTO) recognizes young people between the ages of 13-21 who bring positive attention to Mid-South youth through achieving and excelling in spite of a variety of abstacles in their lives. Additionally, two adults from within the community are recognized for their efforts in community service focusing on youth.
Several past MBTO award winners have finished high school, gone to college, and are now making strides as responsible adults and citizens in the Memphis/Shelby County community and across the nation.

Nominate an extraordinary individual. Often we hear about young people getting into trouble. Seldom do we hear of those who are beating the odds despite the tremendous obstables getting in the way of even the smallest achievents. Memphis "Beat the Odds" focuses attention on the positive potential of young people who are thriving despite their odds,
Annual Awards Banquet
For more than 25 years, MBTO has sponsored an annual awards program recognizing six exceptional youth from the Memphis community. Since 1996, MBTO has also given an award, named in honor of Cathryn Rivers Johnson, a longtime advocate for children, to an adult from the community who has worked tirelessly on behalf of children and youth.
